Both borders and bridges invoke creative responses and interactions among humans. El Paso has witnessed the drawing and re-drawing of national borders for over a century. Residents of the region have been inspired to adapt to the lines drawn around their lives by crossing bridges, both metaphorical and physical. Few places inspire us to probe our responses to borders and boundaries more deeply than the ancient mountain pass at El Paso. This conference will bring diverse border-crossers together to discuss how we transform constraints into opportunities for human interaction. Standing on campus, you will see Mexico, and in its reflection, inspiration for our complex world. Prepared papers and presentations will be minimal, and serve the purpose of introducing themes and maximizing conversation. An internet discussion group will be established in March 2010 to begin the conversation. Participants use a research method that involves iterative writing and rewriting and practice-based narratives that are engaged with and challenged by co-researchers. Participants have found the method leads to new conversational patterns in their professional lives and organizations. The registration fee is due by April 25, 2010. The global financial recession and the collapse of investment capitalism-surely not planned by anyone-make it clear that top executives can't do that. Despite this, current management literature generally continues to avoid the obvious - management's inability to predict or control what will happen in the future. The key question now must be how we are to think about management if we take the uncertainty of organizational life seriously. Ralph Stacey has turned to the sciences of uncertainty and complexity to develop an understanding of leadership and management as the ordinary politics of daily organizational life. In presenting organizations as a series of complex responsive processes, Stacey's new book helps us to see organizational reality for what it actually is - human beings engaged in many, many local conversational interactions and power relations in which they negotiate their ideologically based choices. 4th Annual On the Edge: Nursing in the Age of Complexity Conference

July 18-20, 2010

Gonzaga University

Spokane, WA

Learn the processes that help engage people for learning, action and transformation, and practice using them. Faculty will include Curt Lindberg, DMan, chief learning and science officer of Plexus Institute; Ruth Anderson, Professor at Duke University School of Nursing; Keith McCandless, co-founder of Oblique Strategies and an experienced practitioner of liberating structures; Christina Baldwin, an experienced practitioner of the circle process, and co-author of The Circle Way: A Leader in Every Chair; and many more scholars and practitioners whose knowledge and insight will make this conference an exciting, interactive experience. Sometimes the wisest, kindest and most effective ways to resolve intractable problems are right in front of us, just waiting to be discovered. All the parts of a healthcare system-or any system-are interconnected and continuously changing, visibly and invisibly. Now is the time to find a new way to liberate the hidden forces that bring out the best in your community. Professionals in all healthcare fields face problems exacerbated by uncertainty, scarce resources and increasing complexity. Solving these challenges frequently requires social and behavioral change. The Positive Deviance approach (PD) is based on the belief that in any organization or community there are people whose uncommon practices help them resolve difficult problems better than colleagues with exactly the same resources. PD is a process that fosters change from within. Many wonderful micro-solutions are already practiced in unlikely places by people whose ingenuity can inspire and encourage others. There are lots of reasons for this. Sometimes the findings are not credible, or are too abstract – but in the end, all too frequently, the recommendations are never carry out. In most situations in which an organization asks or is required to take an in-depth, objective look at an issue, the study report is more likely to be the end rather than the beginning of change.

Participatory Action Research is a way to conduct an organizational study that has a very different outcome, that is, change starts to happen while the study is still being conducted. By the time the study is completed there is already a buzz in the organization about the issues and people are trying out changes. Participatory Action Research is, at its heart, a conversational process, not an impersonal survey, nor an experimental design with “subjects;” rather it is a conversation between organizational members. That conversation takes place between interviewer and interviewee, between members of the interview team, and between organizational members in the conversations set up to discuss the findings. All of the conversations are a part of the change. In the end all change is a result of organizational conversation – the only question is who is invited into the conversation. Participatory Action Research is a methodology to focus the organization on conversations that matter and invite into the conversation those whose work will change.

Join us for a conversation about participatory action research with Nancy Dixon sponsored by Plexus Institute. Nancy has an in-depth understanding of tacit knowledge, that includes:

1) how it is developed within each individual's mind and
2) the processes that enable it to move from one mind to another.

She is expert at analyzing conversations to discover why the transfer of critical organizational knowledge is blocked or is occurring effectively.

Nancy is a prolific writer with eight books and over 50 articles on the topic of knowledge transfer and organization learning including:

Common Knowledge: How Companies Thrive by Sharing What They Know (Harvard Business School Press, 2000)

CompanyCommand: Unleashing the Power of the Army Profession By Nancy M. Led by Joe Labianca

1-on-1 Research Development Sessions (appointments available every day)

An opportunity to meet 1-on-1 to discuss your research with Ajay Mehra

For those of you that have attended before, we’ve made a few changes this year. Most important is that we are imposing a limit of 50 participants per session (last year’s 150+ was just too big). We’ve also adjusted the offerings to provide more help with your own research, and to target more specifically certain application areas (such as management, public health, and national security/crime).

One price covers all 6 days of the workshop. Given the limit of 50 participants in each session (except the conference, which is unlimited), it would be a good idea to register early. Besides, there's a 20% early bird discount! Also, fulltime students pay only half price. They combine internal sources such as enterprise data with external Web resources. Mashups are created when different application program interfaces (API) and data are combined or 'mashed' to create an entirely new application.

Mashups are the fastest growing enterprise ecosystem on the Web by far. Mashups are social, role-based, network-centric, complex, distributed and essential to all knowledge-based networks, models and businesses. Enterprise mashups advances improvisational IT, eases departmental backlogs, improves IT agility, responsiveness, productivity and effectiveness at very low cost and complexity.

Enterprise Mashups are a critical method to enhance customer experience, to drive productivity growth (innovation) and achieve fundamental advancements in knowledge economy competitiveness. Customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders gain enormous benefits using enterprise mashups to create new applications and expanding customer benefits and advantages.

Your summit is part of the Enterprise 2.0 Mashup Research Program. By very popular demand, this is the expanded, follow-up version of to the hugely popular 2007 and 2008 EMU 2.0 Summits.

Enterprise Mashup Summit: High Velocity Integration

This summit is open, independent and agnostic. Continued progress in science, education, and technology
is fundamentally dependent on making sense of and finding insights in
overwhelming amounts of data. However, human cognition, while unparalleled at
discovering patterns and linking seemingly-disparate concepts, is also limited
in the amount of information it can process at once. One promising solution to
this problem is through social collaboration, in which groups of individuals
work together to produce knowledge and solve problems that exceed any
individual's cognitive capacity.

In this talk I describe a series of studies examining the importance of
coordination in harnessing the power of the crowds for complex information
processing tasks in Wikipedia and beyond. I also present research into
visualization and machine learning tools aimed at increasing the effectiveness
of these systems. Finally, I discuss early forays into extending social
collaboration to support insight and discovery.

Speaker: Niki Kittur, Carnegie Mellon University
Host: Rob Mille, MIT CSAIL
Date: 2-19-2010
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Kiva Conference Room 32-G449

Speaker Biography:

Aniket Kittur is an assistant professor in the Human-Computer Interaction
Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in
cognitive psychology and did his undergraduate work at Princeton University in
psychology and computer science. Situational projects are unpredictable and transient projects within an organization that come with limited number of users with specific needs. Handling these projects differs from traditional project management approaches. They need rapid and good enough solutions. In this paper a simple and organized approach for managing situational projects is proposed. The proposed approach tries to handle situational projects by creating a mashup infrastructure in the organization. There are three types of participants in our approach: Mashup manager, mashup resource analyst and mashup resource builder. Cooperation between these participants results in managing a situational project. Furthermore a meaningful real world scenario is defined to describe different steps of the approach. In addition, advantages of the proposed approach are identified and challenges of using web mashups along with guidelines to cope with them are expressed.

- Shahriar Mohammadi, Ali Khalili, Sarah Ashoori

Friday 12 March 2010

Technorati Tags: enterprise mashups,EMU Summit

enterprise mashups

Congratulations to enterprise mashup leader JackBe for achieving Microsoft Certified Partner status.

You may track this development and other enterprise mashup news at the popular Enterprise Web 2.0 Blog.

Technorati Tags: enterprise mashups,jackbe
